El sitio se llama así porque en 1843 el arquitecto español Lorenzo de la Hidalga construyó, sobre un zócalo, un monumento a la Independencia en el centro de la capital.
La superficie de esta plaza es de 46,800 metros cuadrados, por lo que se considera la segunda más grande del mundo, sólo superada por la Plaza Roja de Moscú.
En la época virreinal el Zócalo era conocido como “El Parián”, porque las personas lo ocupaban como un mercado para vender sus mercancías, como telas y vajillas traídas de China.
