Located exactly at number 453 on Insurgentes Avenue, this auditorium was built in the old facilities of a movie theater that was famous in the Condesa neighborhood, called "Las Américas."
The “Las Américas” cinema was designed by architect José Villagrán García, who was also in charge of the construction of emblematic buildings in Mexico City, for example, the National Institute of Cardiology.
The opening of this cinema, where the BlackBerry Auditorium is currently located, took place in 1952. Year after year, films of different themes were shown, such as the film “Para siempre amor mío” (Forever My Love) which premiered in 1955.
Over time, the cinema stopped showing films and the building was used as a casino, with a good influx of people, since it is located in a strategic area, the intersection of Insurgentes and Baja California avenues.
It was in 2012 when the history of this building was added to its new use: a forum dedicated to presentations of all kinds, whether musical, sports and even conferences.
For the opening of the auditorium, which took place in March 2012, very well-known musicians in Mexico met: Joselo Rangel, from Café Tacvba; Tito Fuentes, from Molotov and Rodrigo Dávila, from Motel.
For seven years the BlackBerry Auditorium has been visited by a large number of people, which is due, on the one hand, to the shows it offers, and on the other, to its strategic location, which makes getting there very easy.
How to get there?
The BlackBerry Auditorium is located, as we have mentioned, on Avenida Insurgentes, at number 453, so it is part of the buildings located in the heart of the Condesa neighborhood, one of the neighborhoods that offers the most cultural and artistic events.
To get to this venue, it is best to use Avenida Insurgentes. If you are traveling by car and from the north of the city, it is best to take into account that different roads lead to Insurgentes: Montevideo, Circuito Interior and Paseo de la Reforma.
Once on Insurgentes, it is important to be alert and continue along this avenue, passing the Insurgentes roundabout and a few meters further on, passing Álvaro Obregón until you reach Tlaxcala Street, since the next corner is Baja California, where the BlackBerry Auditorium is located.
From the south, the roads that lead to Insurgentes are Periférico Sur, Barranca del Muerto, Río Mixcoac, Félix Cuevas, División del Norte and Viaducto Miguel Alemán.
By public transport, the easiest way to get there is by using the Metro, since this auditorium is located in front of the Chilpancingo station, on Line 9 (which goes from Tacubaya to Pantitlán).
Another option is the Metrobús, the station that is a few steps from the BlackBerry auditorium is called Chilpancingo and is part of Line 1 of this transport system, which runs through Insurgentes from Indios Verdes (north) to El Caminero (south).
BlackBerry Auditorium Capacity
A forum as important as the BlackBerry Auditorium must have a good capacity to accommodate many people, who come to this venue mainly for all the musical performances it holds.
This forum can accommodate a maximum of 4,000 people, some can be seated in the seating area and others can remain standing on the floor of the auditorium; what is a fact is that from any point, the shows can be enjoyed without any problem.
The entire space covered by the stalls and the stands is designed to accommodate 1,172 spectators, while up to 2,748 people can gather on the floor.
One aspect that we must not forget is the acoustics, as this is what helps all the people who enter the BlackBerry Auditorium to attend a concert to hear it with quality and without alterations.
In this regard, a video from Canal Once reported the reason why this auditorium has a good sound emission in all the shows.
“In its original structure it had elements that helped a lot with the acoustics and that was recovered in its remodeling so that it functions as an auditorium for all types of stage shows and especially musical ones.”
